SHOW REVIEW: Built to Spill @ Irving Plaza
So Friday night I was in Philly, Sunday I had Sufjan and last night BTS. Needless to say I was tired. Also, there are many things that suck about Irving Plaza. Besides the fact that for some reason the place has no personality, another main quip of mine is the beer selection - all canned crap. At least BB has some tap selections and Northsix has my Brooklyn Lager, but last night my choices were shit and shittier. I had purchased tickets for this in May for EJ and I and the show got rescheduled to Oct. for some reason. Camper Van Beethoven opened and played for a shitload of time - too long. By the time BTS came on I couldn't even stand I was so tired. We caught about a little more than half the set and bolted - a shame but that's what I get for trying to go to too many shows.

SHOW REVIEW: Sufjan @ Town Hall
So, over a year ago EJ and I were supposed to see Sufjan at Bowery Ballroom for his new album - but fate had it that we'd not make it. Then we were going to go see him at Symphony Space and fate fucked it up again, for me at least. A couple of weeks ago we saw him at the 'Book Eaters' fund raiser. This past Sunday, even with my partial viewing due to the seating, I am officially all Sufjaned out. My problem with the last release also translates to his live show - it's all gotten too big. Too many musicians, too much video, too many arrangements arranged - I miss the intimacy of Michigan and Seven Swans and of Jack Kodiak.

SHOW REVIEW: Cursive in Philly
Last Friday, Ferrin, Bree and I hopped on the NJT train to Trenton where Bain 182 picked us up and drove us to the Starlight where we met up with Meadows and Anthony. It was my first show in Philly and the experience was beyond positive. The venue appeared to be situated conviently in crack town and the establishment served the coldest beer I've had in a long time - I wish every bar served their beer that cold. Cursive completely met my expectations - the set was loud and long... the best moment for me was the closer 'sink to the beat'. I wish every show I went to was as good.

ROCKY BALBOA TRAILER ON THE WEB
Bom bom ba da bom ba da bom...JPG told me the trailer was on the web, so I thought to share it with any fellow enthusiast...are there any? Remember you don't have to be a Rocky Balboa (Rocky VI) enthusiast...just a Rocky enthusiast in general. That's what I am. The first two are awesome. The third isn't bad, just not as good. The fourth gets hokey and a little too cold war political but still is not an awful movie...the fifth one...oh man...sometimes I feel like the fifth one is the reason I started drinking and eventually left the Philadelphia area...

Rocky 5...(If you're wondering why it gets a "5" instead of a "V" it's because it doesn't get a Roman Numeral 'cause it sucks)...was anticipated to be one of the big hits of the 1990 holiday season but instead it was a bomb. It's total U.S. box office gross was $40 million. It finished a disappointing second in its opening weekend (earning 16 million) to another film that opened that weekend, "Home Alone" (earning 17 million) and never recovered. Home Alone although earning only one million more than Rocky 5 in it's opening weekend went on to beat the shit out of Rocky 5's U.S. box office gross by earning 285 million.

I have heard recently that "hardcore" Rocky fans have come around to embrace 5 after some repeated views stating that what makes the film good is it humanizes Rocky once again and brings him back to his roots. I hated it, but I have only seen the film once and maybe if I'm brave I'll give it a second chance. The other thing though is I heard that initially Rocky was supposed to die at the end of 5 but Stallone after considering the glory that Rocky carries with him in the previous films and realizing that Rocky is a cultural American icon much like Superman, changed his mind and revised his script to have Rocky live on and be with his son in the final scene. Yeah? It's a shame that "cultural American icons" can't have any balls and fight to the death...and actually die. I hope Stallone wised up with this installment and let's Rocky die at the end like he should.

The Head Butt Heard Around The World...

Well folks the World Cup is finally over and yes the team that defeated Brazil, and eventually went on to the finals...France, was the the team I was pulling for in the battle for world domination against the Italians. And it looks like all of that trash talking I did (although fun) was for naught. The French went on to lose their best player in the last ten minutes of overtime and subsquently lose the World Cup in a penalty kick shoot out. Why did they lose their best player? So this might seem like a joke post but it's not. I recently received an email from a friend of mine in Toronto who saw the film and met the filmmaker. She is forwarding around a string of emails promoting support for the film's opening weekend in NYC. The film is about a man emerging from the slums of Rio to lead the nonviolent cultural movement known as Afro-reggae.

It is showing at Village East Cinemas Starting Friday: 11:15, 1:15, 3:15, 5:20, 7:20, 9:30

Baby Dayliner show review
Baby Dayliner opened for the National (that review will be coming on Monday). Once he got going it was easy to get into this mixed breed - he was part Morrissey, part Rufus and all eighties. Apparently he samples a lot 80's stuff and rebuilds it for his songs. I kept on yelling out Doveman which if you look at him could have worked as a band name too. Love the handkerchief.

This Argos guy could even make Summerstage shows fun. I went to see Art Brut at Sound Fix and it was great. They played for about an hour, Eddie walked around, talked about Cat Stevens, stood up on the bar and tried to do a little bit of crowd surfing. The sound wasn't great but it was raw and it kinda worked. They played their usual stuff from Bang Bang plus one new song and a New Kids on the Block cover.

Brother Danielson Show Review
A couple of Saturdays ago EJ and I attended Brother Danielson's show. EJ is a big fan. Together I think we have seen them three times, seperately I think she has sneaked in a couple of extra shows. I was tired, EJ was feeling loopy so we left early. I really enjoyed the live version of 'did I step on your trumpet?'.

Harry Potter Hot Movie News.

It looks like somebody was able to sneak onto the set of the next installment of the Harry Potter series and snag a few photos. This stuff has been making the rounds on all of the gossip and movie news blogs already but I figured I would share it with you guys as well.

“The fifth Potter movie, entitled The Order of The Phoenix finds the 15-year-old wizard returning to the School of Witchcraft and Wizardry to confront slanderous gossip, a cruel new professor, and a girl on whom he has a crush. Ominous events lead to the family home of Sirius Black, where Harry learns about the mysterious Order of the Phoenix. Through the grapevine we’ve heard that these leaked photos are of a character who was created specifically for this film and has never and will never appear in the books. From what we can gather together so far the character is an evil wizard who was imprisioned in the basement of Hogwarts by Harry’s father 20 years ago but now has escaped to seek revenge on Young Harry. The character’s name is either supposed to be Balthazar Beaverbeard or possibly Count Crunkledunk and is to be played by a hollywood newcomer Joseph K. Gannon."

Mr. Gannon trained at The Neighborhood Playhouse in NYC and has appeared in a number of small projects. The most noteworthy are these three:

Team C.I.A. didn't win the grand prize but we did win a ton of admiration, envy, friends, a homophobe, a few drink tickets and a shitload of baked zitti. First off, The Mole, Special Agent Buffalo Bill, 00 Homing Pigeon and Field Agent Grey Squirrel would like to thank Mr. Ferrin for the amazing name and logo - people wanted to buy our shirts - of course we couldn't sell them because they were state issued uniforms. But even more importantly we would like to thank Field Agent Grey Squirrel for organizing the mission, cutting out the iron on transfers, fronting the capital for the operation and being the fearless leader she is. Below are some of the highlights from the hunt - more explicit classified photos will be emailed to the individual team members

Special Agent Buffalo Bill walking three dogs at the same time - it also looks like he made a love connection between a couple of them. Side note: the spotted dutch hound is actually our man from the Holland branch, Van Basten. The other two were decoys.

Special Agent Buffalo Bill and The Mole simulating hard labor in front of 50 Park Place. Little did the inspectors know that we were also installing sensitive Soviet spy pinhole cameras (the 1960's Chertovka models to be exact) - we have footage of them not noticing if anyone is interested.

Field Agent Grey Squirrel and a stranger drawing inspiration from 'Lady and the Tramp' and sharing an intimate bite of a pretzel. What the 'stranger' did not know was that Field Agent Grey Squirrel was actually extracting a fake tooth with a mini micro microphone in it from the subject's mouth. We saw the evidence later that day - gross!

Special Agent Buffalo Bill and The Mole had to locate a civilian in a beret and be in a picture with him - without the subject knowing! Not a problem since Field Agent Grey Squirrel had packed the EF 100-400mm zoom lens. Nice work Field Agent Grey Squirrel and cute ass Special Agent Buffalo Bill!

00 Homing Pigeon, a stranger, Special Agent Buffalo Bill and Field Agent Grey Squirrel walking the tightrope. As a team we have been practicing balance precision techniques for years, but adding the stranger into the mix almost cut us down to a team of one. It would have been a strong team of one, but still a team of one.

Special Agent Buffalo Bill likes to point a lot. I warned him about it. No matter what disguise he employs as soon as that finger extends his cover is blown. This NYC cop wasn't having any of it and placed that pointer in a chinese finger cuff. Luckily Special Agent Buffalo Bill had the key stashed in his beard.

Team C.I.A. had to take a break on the beachy area under the Manhattan Bridge. Special Agent Buffalo Bill, really a Water Buffalo, can't see water without wanting to jump in right away. 00 Homing Pigeon was looking for change while Field Agent Grey Squirrel was building a relief map in the sand for our next mission. What was I doing? I'm an insectivore, not a rodent so I was looking for earthworms... or was I?

And lastly the money shot: The Mole, Special Agent Buffalo Bill, 00 Homing Pigeon and Field Agent Grey Squirrel simultaneously suspended off the ground in unison - we learnt that one during basic training in Morocco, you can't get that sort of knowledge in America.

And here we are at the after party - one of the first to arrive and one of the last to leave... (we all just crashed in our surveillance van afterwards, although a couple of us did stay up late playing with the quads & multiplexors).

IT FINALLY HAPPENED!!! After months and months of trash talking, training, and testosterone the highly anticipated arm wrestling competition between two mix members (James & Dr.D) finally went down last Friday night at Vbar & cafe. As a courtesy to the general public and mix members who missed the highly anticipated event we have placed a mini documentary of the battle on Youtube and uploaded it below for your viewing pleasure.

If you were lucky enough to be there and witness the battle you should still watch the video/documentary to prove to yourself that it wasn't all dream. Also the video/documentary features a large chunk of the song "Up My Sleeve" by Palaxy Tracks, which if you don't remember appeared on one of our trusty mixes last time around.

I'm not a writer, plus I am dead tired this morning but I'd like to thank Joe for finding out about this play and reserving the seats. The stories were very well written, the acting stellar and the music was great - all for $8. The company tries to do this show a couple of times a year so keep your eyes peeled for it next time around. Zarathustra Said Some Things, No?
I've seen alot of stuff from these guys and try when I can to support their work. They are mostly Neighborhood Playhouse Graduates and a great bunch of talented hard working people. 4 plays written by 4 writers that all include music and a boombox. Each play is distinct, yet flows in and out of what precedes and follows, creating a unified experience not unlike...a really good mixed tape. For the ultimate in flow, writer #2 can only read script 1 before starting, writer #3 reads only script 2 and #4 reads only script 3 and they each carry over one character from the previous play.

On July 14, 2003 I was released from prison after serving 12 2/3 years. Since that time I have lived the kind of life that, when I was facing 25 to life, I never dreamed possible. Part of that new life was getting admitted to New York University as a creative writing major. I graduate this May, next month. For the writing classes at NYU, I produced several short stories based on significant events in my life as, more or less, they happened. TONIGHT April 13th 7-11 PM:

I can't go to this, but here are the details. This is a theatre group comprised mostly of Neighborhood Playhouse alumni. I do my best to check out their shows or go to fundraisers when I can. Tonight's fundraiser starts at 7:00, and according to this flyer there is some free food, provided that you get there before it runs out. The thing that makes this really "MIXER" worthy is there is a "People's Pod Off" where if you pay $5 you get 30 minutes to play DJ. The whole thing is a pretty cheap night and for a good group of people trying to do good stuff. All the info is there, so go there get drunk and scream the name Stalin into the darkness of the night air.

The time has come, The National are playing a (recently added) show at the Bowery Ballroom on Sunday May 21st 2006. If you want to go, you better buy your tickets now. Seriously, right now, put the diet coke & club sandwich down now and prioritize, because if you haven't already looked at our cousin-blog thisisthebeard.blogspot.com then you don't know that those bearded clowns are in the Philadelphia Metro today. Now that means their blog is going to be getting major hits, and considering the fact that we're linked to them we'll be getting some slightly higher traffic as well. What does all this mean? Well the concert isn't even posted on the National's website yet, I received info on it through a mailing list, so talking about it on this blog (which could have some new readers today) could potentially spread this info like wildfire and help the concert sell out faster than you think.

You can tell two things about this photo. First that it is old, back in the days when Joe wore glasses and only had chops and a stash, no full beard. Secondly, it was taken during the day - that's why Joe's making a Latté and not pouring a glass of wine. Sure people drink coffee at night, but not often. Stop by during the day sometime and try one of Joe's lattés - a girl even wrote a paper about how good they were.
